About Doorvest
Founded in 2020, Doorvest is a real estate technology and investment platform that democratizes access to single-family rental investing. Headquartered in San Francisco and backed by top-tier venture firms including M13, Mucker Capital, and Gaingels, we’ve helped hundreds of investors build wealth through institutional-grade real estate.
We run an end-to-end platform spanning acquisition, management, and exits, with curated single-family rentals across six-plus markets in Ohio, Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. We’ve crossed $100M in assets under management and distributed more than $36M in rent to investors. We are scaling fast, and we run our operations like a technology company: distributed teams, a managed vendor network, and a heavy reliance on data and tooling to move faster than a traditional property manager ever could.
The Role
We are hiring a VP of Operations to own maintenance and field operations across all 6+ markets we serve. You will build and run a distributed operation where a network of vendors does the work on the ground while you orchestrate it remotely: dispatching jobs, holding vendors to SLAs, managing last-mile logistics, controlling spend, and keeping homeowners, agents, and internal teams unblocked. The work spans routine HVAC and plumbing through make-ready turns, light remodels, and full renovations.
This is a leadership role with an individual contributor component; this role is responsible for ensuring that all work orders are completed on time, in a quality and efficient manner. At times, this leader will need to roll up their sleeves and assist with different projects like work order dispatch. As with any start-up, your role will sometimes require personal work on specific homes or work orders.
Maintenance is a revenue line here, not only a cost center. You will own its P&L, build the program behind it from the ground up, and build the tooling that runs it — we run on AI internally, and we expect you to use Claude to prototype the dashboards and automations you need rather than wait on an engineering sprint. This role is for someone who treats roadblocks as something to be removed, not reported.
What You’ll Own
• Own maintenance and field operations as a P&L across all six-plus markets — revenue, margin, and cost — run remotely through a distributed vendor network rather than local on-site staff.
• Grow maintenance revenue: pricing, scope capture, and the margin between vendor cost and billed work, alongside estimate review, vendor billing, and invoice accuracy.
• Dispatch daily, and lead the distributed team doing the same. Hire, coach, and grow it.
• Build the maintenance program: service tiers, preventative maintenance, SLA definitions, approval thresholds, vendor scorecards, and the playbooks that make it repeatable when we open the next market.
• Source, onboard, manage, and performance-review vendors and contractors (including offshore support teams), and hold them to cost, quality, and turnaround SLAs.
• Own last-mile execution: dispatch, scheduling, parts and access logistics, escalations, and the hand-offs between vendors, agents, and homeowners that usually cause delays.
• Ensure all turnovers, renovations, inspections, and routine maintenance hit internal SLAs across markets.
• Communicate with homeowners to scope and approve recommended work, and keep real estate agents and internal teams unblocked.
• Build the tooling yourself with Claude — dispatch views, vendor scorecards, margin dashboards, automations — then partner with Product and Engineering to productionize what proves out.
• Live in the data, and take on special projects including operational integrations of acquired companies.
• Who You Are
• 8+ years running operations at scale, ideally in a high-growth, technology-driven, or marketplace environment (e.g. logistics, field services, last-mile delivery, on-demand services, gig-economy ops, supply chain, or rapidly scaling startups). Multi-market or multi-site experience is required.
• 5+ years managing people, and managing a network of external vendors or contractors to hit hard SLAs.
• A genuine player-coach: you have led a team while still carrying work of your own, and you are energized rather than insulted by that.
• Commercial ownership — you have carried a P&L, a margin target, or a revenue line, and can say concretely how you moved it.
• A technology and data orientation, and AI-native instincts: you already reach for LLMs to analyze and build. You’d rather build a system than firefight one ticket at a time.
• A track record of aggressive task completion and high ownership, with strong communication skills across vendors, executives, and customers alike.
• Comfortable with a flexible schedule (including occasional weekends/holidays as the business requires) and occasional travel.
• Bonus: familiarity with property maintenance, construction, or renovation; experience standing up operations in new markets; property-management software exposure (e.g. Rentvine). None of these are required if you’ve run distributed operations at scale.
• What We’re Not Looking For
This is not a traditional property manager role, and it is not a single-market or single-portfolio job. It is also not a purely strategic VP seat — if you have spent recent years exclusively managing managers and have not touched the work itself, you will find this uncomfortable. We’re looking for an operator who has scaled a distributed, vendor-powered operation, wants to own it as a business rather than a function, and wants to build the next one with strong technology and data behind them.
