We are partnered with a growing, privately held general contractor in the Greater Boston area seeking an experienced Project Accountant to join its team in Quincy.
The company specializes in multifamily and residential construction throughout Greater Boston, delivering ground-up apartment buildings, condominium developments, mixed-use projects, affordable housing, and renovation work. The business has built a strong reputation around hands-on project delivery, long-term relationships, and a lean operating structure that gives employees meaningful exposure to both senior leadership and active construction projects.
Rather than operating like a large corporate contractor, the company maintains a close-knit environment where accounting, operations, project management, and field teams work directly together. The Project Accountant will be an important part of that structure, supporting the financial performance of multiple active projects from startup through closeout.
The Opportunity
The Project Accountant will work closely with the CFO, Project Managers, operations leadership, subcontractors, and vendors to manage the day-to-day financial administration of assigned construction projects.
This position is well suited for someone with construction accounting experience who wants greater ownership, direct interaction with project teams, and visibility into the financial side of active multifamily construction.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage project accounting across multiple active construction projects
• Process subcontractor and vendor invoices
• Track project costs, commitments, budgets, and financial activity
• Prepare and process owner billings and subcontractor payments
• Manage AIA-style progress billing and supporting documentation
• Track contracts, purchase orders, change orders, and subcontractor commitments
• Maintain accurate job-cost information and project financial records
• Assist Project Managers with cost reporting, forecasting, and budget reconciliation
• Review lien waivers, insurance documentation, and subcontractor compliance requirements
• Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions related to assigned projects
• Identify cost discrepancies and coordinate with project teams to resolve issues
• Assist with monthly financial reporting and project closeout
• Communicate directly with subcontractors, vendors, Project Managers, and internal leadership
• Maintain organized and accurate accounting documentation throughout the project lifecycle
Ideal Background
• Several years of project accounting or construction accounting experience
• Experience working for a general contractor, construction manager, developer, subcontractor, or similar construction organization
• Strong understanding of job costing, progress billing, subcontractor payments, commitments, and change orders
• Experience with AIA billing and construction-related accounts payable/accounts receivable
• Comfortable managing the financial administration of multiple projects simultaneously
• Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting or construction-management software
• Highly organized and detail-oriented
• Able to communicate effectively with both accounting and operations teams
• Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of assigned responsibilities
• Interested in joining a growing organization and developing into a long-term member of the team
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys construction accounting but wants to be closer to the projects themselves.
The company operates with a relatively lean team, allowing the Project Accountant to work directly with Project Managers, senior financial leadership, and other decision-makers rather than being siloed within a large accounting department.
The organization is continuing to expand its multifamily portfolio throughout Greater Boston, creating an opportunity to join during a period of growth while still benefiting from a collaborative, hands-on environment.
Employees are trusted with meaningful responsibility and are expected to be proactive, organized, and capable of solving problems independently. The culture places a strong emphasis on teamwork, accountability, communication, and delivering quality work for clients and project
partners.
