Compounding Pharmacy Technician

About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and quality-driven Compounding Pharmacy Technician to join our pharmacy team. This role is responsible for the accurate preparation of non-sterile (and, where applicable, sterile) compounded medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, in full compliance with Virginia Board of Pharmacy regulations and USP compounding standards. This is an excellent opportunity for a technician who takes pride in precision, documentation, and patient safety.
Responsibilities
• Accurately measure, mix, and prepare compounded medications (non-sterile and/or sterile, per assignment) according to formulation records and physician orders
• Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), USP (non-sterile) and/or USP (sterile) guidelines, and facility-specific compounding protocols
• Maintain compounding logs, batch records, and Master Formulation Records with a high degree of accuracy
• Perform quality control checks on raw materials, in-process compounds, and finished preparations
• Properly label, package, and store compounded medications per state and federal requirements
• Maintain a clean, organized, and properly calibrated compounding lab, including routine equipment maintenance and cleaning logs
• Manage inventory of compounding chemicals, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and supplies, including proper storage and rotation
• Assist with receiving, verifying, and reconciling incoming pharmaceutical ingredients and components
• Communicate professionally with pharmacists, prescribers, and patients regarding compounded orders
• Maintain strict confidentiality of patient health information in accordance with HIPAA
• Support finishing/final-check processes, including reconciliation of compounded batches prior to dispensing
• Participate in ongoing training, competency assessments, and continuing education as required
Qualifications
• Active Pharmacy Technician Registration with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy (Va. Code § 54.1-3321), or eligibility to obtain trainee registration prior to start
• National certification through PTCB (CPhT) or NHA (ExCPT), or active enrollment in a Board-recognized training program working toward certification
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 1+ year of pharmacy technician experience; compounding experience strongly preferred
• Working knowledge of USP and/or USP standards (or willingness to train)
• Strong math and measurement skills; comfort with precision instruments (scales, graduated cylinders, etc.)
• Excellent attention to detail and documentation habits
• Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a controlled lab environment (gowning, PPE use as required)
Preferred Skills
• Prior experience in a licensed compounding pharmacy (non-sterile or sterile)
• Familiarity with compounding software/documentation systems
• Experience with hazardous drug handling and USP awareness
• Background in a regulated manufacturing, clinical, or laboratory setting
Lab/pharmacy production environment requiring gowning and PPE
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive fine-motor tasks
Exposure to pharmaceutical chemicals and controlled substances handled under strict safety protocols
